“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4 NIV).
No one gets to live a life without setbacks. Jesus himself said, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). Trouble is guaranteed. It’s part of the human experience.
The real question is not whether you’ll face storms—it’s how will you respond when they come?
Will setbacks dominate you? Will discouragement steal your passion and purpose? Or will you let God use the valley to shape your faith and strengthen your character?
If we’re not careful, setbacks can pull us in the wrong direction:
Drifting from our goals. We start hearing that inner whisper: “What’s the use of trying?” Slowly, we let go of the very calling God has placed on our lives.
Discarding what we value. In seasons of deep pain, we can be tempted to loosen our grip on what matters most—our faith, our family, our integrity.
Despairing about the future. We begin to believe the lie that it’s over, that nothing good can come from our brokenness.
As a pastor, I’ve watched people respond to setbacks in each of these ways. And here’s what I’ve learned: the true test of faith isn’t how high you raise your hands when you’re singing God’s praises; it’s how steadily you walk when you’re in the valley of the shadow of death.
You see, in every storm you need an anchor. Without one, you’ll drift. But with the right one, you’ll hold steady—no matter how fierce the winds blow. And there is only one anchor strong enough: the unshakable presence of God.
Psalm 23 reminds us, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” God doesn’t always remove the valley. He doesn’t always stop the storm. But he promises to walk with us through it. His presence is the greatest anchor of all.
When you feel hopeless, remember: God hasn’t left you. He is closer than you think. In fact, you’ve never been nearer to him than you are right now, in this very moment—even if you don’t feel it. Because faith isn’t about feelings; it’s about truth. And the truth is, God is with you.
Romans 8:38–39 says it this way: “I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us” (The Message).
When the winds rise and the waters roar, let this be your anchor: God is with you, and his love will never let you go. That truth will give you stability in any storm.
