You Were Never Meant to Do Life Alone

Aug 27, 2026

The first thing God said was not good about His creation was that Adam was alone. Genesis 2:18 says, “It is not good that man should be alone.”

God wasn’t simply talking about marriage. He was revealing something fundamental about how He created us: we were made for relationships. We need people.

I've heard people say that complete independence is the key to happiness. But after counseling hundreds of people, I can tell you that simply isn't true. Complete independence doesn't lead to happiness. More often, it leads to loneliness.

The quickest way to become miserable, resentful, fearful, or insecure is to convince yourself that you don't need anyone else.

The truth is, you weren't designed to do life alone.

We need people who will celebrate with us when life is good, encourage us when life is hard, pray for us when we don't know what to pray, and lovingly tell us the truth when we need to hear it.

And that's one of the beautiful things about being part of a church family.

Our physical families can change. Kids grow up. People move away. But God has given us another family—the family of believers. And when we intentionally build relationships within the church, we have people who can walk alongside us through every season of life.

Here are three reasons you need community:

1. It's safer.

Have you ever had to walk through a dark alley by yourself? You probably felt a whole lot better when someone was walking beside you!

Life can have some pretty dark seasons, too. When you're facing grief, disappointment, temptation, fear, or uncertainty, you don't have to walk through it alone. Having people around you who will encourage you, pray with you, and offer godly wisdom makes all the difference.

The Bible says, “In the multitude of counselors there is safety.” — Proverbs 11:14 (NKJV)

Sometimes the safest thing you can do is let someone else walk beside you.

2. It's supportive.

Community keeps you from giving up.

There will be seasons when your faith feels strong and seasons when you're tired and discouraged. When you have people around you who are walking the same direction, they can help you keep going.

Sometimes you need someone to say, “Don't give up. Keep going. I'm praying for you.”

3. It's smarter.

When you're completely on your own, you only have your own perspective. And let's be honest—we don't always see things clearly.

The Bible says, “Only fools would trust what they alone think.” — Proverbs 28:26 (CEV)

God can use other people to give us wisdom, perspective, correction, and encouragement. When you walk with other believers, you learn from their experiences and gain perspectives you might never have discovered on your own.

Community teaches us how to listen, how to love, how to forgive, how to serve, and how to grow. So, if you've been trying to do everything on your own, maybe it's time to let some people in.

Don't just come to church on Sunday and then go home. Find your people. Build relationships. Let others know you. And let them walk with you.
