You Can't Earn Grace, It's a Gift

May 22, 2026

“All need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ.” Romans 3:24 (NCV)

If you stopped a hundred people on the street and asked, “How do you get to heaven?” you’d probably hear a hundred different answers. But most of them would point to the same basic idea: You have to earn it.

People might say things like:

“Try to be a good person.”

“Do more good than bad.”

“Work hard at being moral.”

“Go to church.”

“Help people.”

At the core, all those answers are based on human effort. They’re based on the belief that somehow we can work our way to God. But the Bible teaches something totally different.

Salvation is not something you earn—it’s something you receive.

Romans 3:24 says, “All need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ” (NCV).

A gift is not something you work for. If you have to earn it, it’s not a gift anymore. You can’t buy God’s grace, deserve it, or achieve it through good behavior. Grace is freely given because of what Jesus Christ has already done for you.

That’s one of the biggest differences between Christianity and every other religion in the world. Most religions can be summed up with one word: “do.” Do these rituals. Follow these rules. Work harder. Try harder.

The message is always about what you must do to earn approval, peace, or eternity.

But following Christ is built on one completely different word: “done.” Jesus has already done what needed to be done to restore your relationship with God. That’s why, while hanging on the cross, Jesus said, “It is finished.” He didn’t say, “I am finished.” Jesus wasn’t defeated. He wasn’t powerless. Three days later, he rose again. The “it” Jesus was talking about was the payment for sin. The plan of salvation had been completed. The debt had been paid in full.

One time a man asked, “What can I do to be saved?”

The answer is both simple and humbling: You can’t do anything to earn it because Jesus has already done everything necessary for your salvation.

You are about 2,000 years too late to add anything to what Jesus accomplished on the cross. That’s grace.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith... not by works, so that no one can boast” (NIV).

Religion says, “Change first, then maybe God will love you.” Grace says, “God already loves you, and his love is what changes you.”

That doesn’t mean our actions don’t matter. A relationship with Jesus changes the way we live. But we don’t obey God in order to earn salvation—we obey because we’re grateful for the salvation we’ve already received.

When you truly understand grace, it changes everything. It lifts the burden of trying to prove yourself. It replaces fear with peace. It replaces striving with gratitude.

Grace really is the greatest gift you will ever receive. Now your part... will you accept his free gift of Grace?
