The Heart of Generosity

Oct 30, 2026

“Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.” — 1 Timothy 6:17–19 (NLT)

This passage has an important message for all of us. It begins by addressing “those who are rich in this world.”

By global standards, many of us who live in America have access to resources and opportunities that others around the world do not. That means these verses challenge us to think carefully about how we use what God has given us.

But is it possible to have wealth without becoming materialistic? Absolutely! Materialism isn't about how much money you have; it's about the place money holds in your heart. You can have very little and still be greedy, or you can have much and live with a generous, contented heart. What matters is whether you trust in your possessions or in God.

So, how do we develop the kind of heart God wants us to have when we give? It starts with our attitude.

“You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’” — 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)

This verse highlights four important attitudes that shape a generous heart.

1. Give thoughtfully.

Generosity doesn't have to be impulsive. Thoughtful giving means taking time to pray. We plan for the things that matter to us, and our generosity should be intentional, too. Rather than giving only when an opportunity happens to appear, make generosity a regular part of your life.

2. Give enthusiastically.

Giving shouldn't feel like a burden or something we do out of fear or obligation. We can give with enthusiasm because we know God can use what we offer to make a difference in someone else's life. Generosity also helps us grow in faith and become more like Jesus.

3. Give voluntarily.

God doesn't want our giving to be motivated by guilt, manipulation, or pressure from others. He wants it to come from a willing heart. When you sense God prompting you to give, serve, or help someone in need, respond with faith and a willingness to obey.

4. Give cheerfully.

Generosity is something to celebrate! We can experience genuine joy when we share what we have and see how it blesses others. Giving isn't just about what someone else receives; it's also about the joy that comes from living with an open heart and open hands.

Jesus taught us this powerful truth: “You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” — Acts 20:35 (NLT)

Think about how exciting it is when children grow to the point where they're more excited about giving someone a Christmas gift than opening their own presents. That shift reflects a growing understanding of love: the joy isn't just in what we receive, but in what we can give to others.

The same is true in our spiritual lives. As we mature in our faith, we begin to find greater joy in sharing what God has given us than in simply accumulating more for ourselves. We recognize that our time, talents, money, and resources can all be used to bless others and show them God's love.

A generous heart is a sign of spiritual growth. The more we trust God, the less tightly we need to hold on to what we have. We can give freely, knowing that our security isn't found in our possessions but in Him.

So, what is your attitude toward giving? Do you give thoughtfully, enthusiastically, voluntarily, and cheerfully?

Ask God to show you one way you can be more generous this week. It might mean giving financially, serving someone who needs help, sharing your talents, or simply giving someone your undivided attention.

Remember, generosity isn't measured only by the amount you give. It's revealed in the heart behind it. When we share what God has entrusted to us, we reflect His goodness and become more like Jesus.
