Living Generously, Like Jesus

March 14, 2025

When we hear the word “generosity,” the first thing that often comes to mind is money. While financial giving can often be part of generosity, true generosity is much bigger than that. It’s a matter of the heart. Living generously is a way of life.

Generosity isn’t just about what’s in our wallet; it’s about what’s in our heart. It’s about our time, our talents, our kindness, our willingness to serve, and our attitude toward others. The most generous people aren’t always the wealthiest—they are the ones who give freely of themselves, no matter what they have.

At its core, generosity is a response to God’s generosity toward us. Everything we have… our time, talents, resources, and opportunities… they are all are gifts from Him.

Here's what a lifestyle of generosity like Jesus could look like:

Generosity with Your Time

Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can give isn’t money—it’s your time. People are busy, and schedules are packed, but when you take time to listen, encourage, and be present for someone, that is an act of generosity.

●     Taking time to check in on a friend who’s struggling.

●     Being intentional about spending time with your family.

●     Serving in your church or community, even when it’s inconvenient.

Time is one of the most precious things we have, and when we give it freely, it speaks volumes about the love of Christ in us.

Generosity with Your Talents

God has given each of us unique gifts and abilities, and they weren’t meant to be kept to ourselves. Your talents are a way to bless others.

1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

●     If you have a gift for teaching: teach Sunday school or help with youth or lead a small group.

●     If you’re creative: help teach art at VBS or be a part of the SCC event team.

●     If you’re great at organizing, help someone else get organized.

Whatever you’re good at, use it to serve others and glorify God.

Generosity with Your Words

Encouragement is free, yet it is one of the most generous things you can give. A kind word, a thoughtful note, a prayer for someone who is struggling—these small things can make a big impact.

Proverbs 11:25 says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Who can you encourage today? A simple word of kindness can bring life to someone who needs it.

Generosity with Your Resources

While generosity is more than money, financial giving is still an important part of a generous life. When we give freely, we acknowledge that everything we have belongs to God in the first place.

Generosity with our finances could mean:

●     Giving to your church to support ministry and outreach.

●     Helping someone in need without expecting anything in return.

●     Supporting a missionary or a cause that aligns with God’s work.

Financial generosity is a step of faith, but God promises that when we give, He will provide for our needs.

A Lifestyle of Generosity

Living generously isn’t about a single act—it’s about a mindset. It’s about waking up each day and asking, How can I give today? How can I be a blessing to someone else?

Jesus was the ultimate example of generosity. He gave His time, His wisdom, His love, and ultimately, His life for us. When we live generously, we reflect Him to the world.

So, how can you start living generously today? Because a generous life is a life that looks like Jesus.
