A really big part of serving like Jesus served is simply being available. This doesn’t mean you necessarily have to have a ton of free time, but you make yourself available when it comes to serving those around you.
Are you willing to be interrupted?
There is a story in Matthew where Jesus was walking down the road to go to Jericho and some blind men start yelling toward him.
Matthew 20:30‑32 (NLT) "Two blind men shouted 'Lord, have mercy on us!'...Jesus stopped and called them. 'What do you want me to do for you?'".
Jesus stopped what he was doing. If you want to be used by God, if you want to serve God, you must be willing to be interrupted. Most of Jesus' ministry and most of Jesus' miracles were interruptions.
You think about it. All the people he healed...the blind man, the lame man, the sick people, the paralyzed man, the dead child...all of them were interruptions.
His first miracle ‑ interrupted at a wedding. The second miracle ‑ interrupted on the way to Galilee. It says "Jesus stopped". Almost every miracle Jesus did, He did it because He let Himself be interrupted. Almost all the ministry He did, He did it because He allowed Himself to be interrupted.
Proverbs 3:28 (NLT) "If you can help your neighbor now, don't say, "Come back tomorrow, and then I'll help you."
Servant‑hearted people, Fully Devoted Followers, don't procrastinate. They are willing to stop and serve those around them, even if it didn’t fit in with their original agenda for the day. Even when it is inconvenient.
I encourage you to be on the lookout this week. Who can you serve? Maybe it’s someone in you live with. Maybe you pick up a chore that isn’t normally yours, but because you have a servant’s heart, you do it for them to make their day easier. Who can you serve at work? Maybe you make some adjustments in your schedule and you start serving in youth or kid’s ministry right here at church. Maybe this is the year you even decide to serve at VBS.
Make time to serve wherever you go. Embrace interruptions from people who need you. Jesus did.
