No one knows the future, except God. You probably already knew that. This probably isn’t groundbreaking news for you. But, how you choose to let this truth change the way you look at your future can make all the difference.
Here are three truths about the future that, if you live like you believe them, will give you peace and confidence even when things are uncertain.
Hebrews 4:13a "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes…”
God can see it all. God is not limited by time. God can be in the past, the present and the future all at the same time. He can see it all at once. That means that God is never surprised by anything.
Psalm 139:16 "You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed."
It says all your days were allotted even before you were born. When you were in your mother's womb God already knew the number of days you were going to live. There's nothing He doesn't know, and there's nothing that's going to surprise Him.
He not only knows my future but He has a plan for my future.
Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope."
This is telling us that God has done a lot of thinking about your future. God's thought more about your future than you have. He has plans for your life. They are good plans, plans that give you hope, plans that give you a future -- not plans to harm you, but plans to bless you. God has a plan for your life.
Can I miss God's plan for my life? Of course People miss God's plan all the time. Millions of people go through life and miss God's plan completely. You can miss it through apathy, arrogance, being ignorant of His plan, or rebellion.
In fact, most people miss God's plan for their life. But He does have a plan for you. And it is a good plan. It's your choice to either get in on it and cooperate with it or miss it and miss the very reason for which you were created.
You were created on purpose for a purpose.
The third thing the Bible says about my future is God will be with me every step of the way.
When we become a fully devoted follower of Jesus, that doesn’t mean life just gets easy. That doesn’t mean we don’t go through pain. That doesn’t mean we don’t ever grieve loss.
But, it does mean we don’t go through it alone. God is with us every step of the way, and that makes a HUGE difference.
Hebrews 13:5 "For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”
None of us know what's going to happen this next year. But regardless of what happens to you, you're not going to go through it alone. God says, "I'm with you, I'll always be with you, I have been with you, I'm going to keep on being with you! You'll never go through it alone." This is called God's faithfulness.
Psalm 34:4 "I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears."
Our fears come from either not understanding or not trusting various aspects of God's character. If we want to get over our fears, the secret is to seek the Lord, to understand what God's really like. Because once we understand what God's really like, we don't have anything to be afraid of.
As believers, we will go through hardships. As believers, we will still have struggles, but we won’t go through it alone. We can have confidence that, in the end, Jesus will get us through anything.
We can have hope for our future, all because of Christ.
