What the Bible Says About Wisdom

February 23, 2024

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.” (Proverbs 3:13-18)

There is a difference between smart and wise. Knowledge and wisdom are not the same. Many highly-educated, smart people have personal lives that are just a mess, because they lack wisdom.

God says, “Don’t fool yourself. Don’t think that you can be wise merely by being up-to-date with the times” (1 Corinthians 3:18 The Message).

There’s nothing wrong with being well-educated, but being smart doesn’t automatically make you wise. Even if you have all of the correct information in the world about something, that doesn’t mean you’re going to do the right thing with that information.

Real wisdom comes from God.

Wisdom is applying knowledge with discernment and good judgment.

The Bible says, “The Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6).

The only way to be wise is to walk with God. And to walk with God, you need to spend time reading and studying the Bible. There are no shortcuts to wisdom.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God . . . and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5).

God isn’t holding back wisdom. He gives wisdom to anybody who asks for it.

The book of Proverbs is a great place to start if you’d like to learn how to live a life of wisdom. And, a life of wisdom can make your whole life better. You’ll have better relationships, make better choices and know how to handle difficult situations that we all face.

“I will teach you wisdom’s ways and lead you in straight paths.” (Proverbs 4:11).
