Preparing for a Category 5 Catastrophe
Every year in Florida we are told to prepare for a hurricane. When we see a Cat 4 or Cat 5 coming, we spring into action. We prepare. Plywood, gas, generators, food, water. It’s a good thing we get some notice. Can you imagine if a Cat 5 Hurricane could spring up like a tornado with virtually no warning? You’d have to be prepared all the time.
Well, the big storms of life, the Cat 5 Catastrophes of life often come without warning. We need to do what it takes to prepare ourselves before those catastrophes hit us. Is there really a way to prepare yourself for an emotional disaster? Yes.
How do I improve my resistance to shock? Let me just give you two things.
1. I can cultivate stronger RELATIONSHIPS.
Cultivate stronger relationships. God never intended for you to go through life on your own, handling all your problems without any support group. In fact, God created a spiritual family that will last into eternity. So, you need to cultivate strong relationships. The best time for you to build a safety net for the crises that are going to inevitably happen in your life is obviously before they happen.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
If you are not in a life group I beg you, let me help you find one. Life groups are key to getting through tough times. Cultivate those relationships now.
2. I can grow spiritual ROOTS.
You need to grow spiritual roots so that when the heat’s on, you’re not a tumbleweed. You don’t dry up and blow away. You’ve got to get some spiritual roots in your life.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 “Blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they go right on producing delicious fruit.”
The California redwoods, the coastal redwoods, are the tallest living things on the planet. Nothing is bigger. The sequoia redwoods are the largest redwoods and the coastal redwoods are the tallest redwoods, and they can grow up to 400 feet tall. Here’s an interesting thing. For a tree that’s over 300 feet tall they don’t have that many roots. Really. The big surprise to people about redwoods, the largest living thing on the planet is that their roots aren’t nearly as deep as others are. The reason why is this: Redwoods grow in groves. Instead of putting down really deep tap roots, they grow roots out sideways and they hold each other up.
You’ve got a grove here. It’s called Seminole Church. You need to be in a grove. You need to be in a life group; you need to be in a church where we hold each other up.
You don’t have to be super deep, but you do have to be super connected.
