3 Facts to Kill Your Fear of the Future
Why are we afraid of the future? One reason is we don't know what it's going to bring. It's an unknown. Even our best forecasts are educated guesses. Nobody really knows what's going to happen in the future. You may know a lot, have an incredible IQ, you may have a PhD, but you don't know what's going to happen in the future. I don't care how smart you are it's just an educated guess. On top of that the future is uncontrollable.
But, even though we don’t know the future, and even though it is out of our control, we do not have to fear it. Today I want to give you three facts from scripture about your future to give you hope and to kill your fears.
1. God knows EVERYTHING that's going to happen to you.
Hebrews 4:13a "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes…”
God can see it all. God is not limited by time. God can be in the past, the present and the future all at the same time. He can see it all at once.
For instance, if I were able to take you up in a helicopter and you were to look down on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade you could see the beginning of the parade, the middle of the parade and the end of the parade all at once. But a person on the ground could only see what was in front of him at that particular time. Likewise from God's perspective He can see it all. There is nothing hidden. He knows everything that's going to happen to you because He's already in the future as well as already in the past. That means that God is never surprised by anything. He'll never say, "Oh really? I never expected that to happen!" because He always knows what's going to happen.
Psalm 139:16 "You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed."
Notice that the verse says "before." It says all your days were allotted even before you were born. When you were in your mother's womb God already knew the number of days you were going to live. You need to see that God knows it all. There's nothing He doesn't know and there's nothing that's going to surprise Him. I tell my kids all the time, “God is the only one who knows the future. That’s why we need to consult him in everything we do.”
2. God has a PLAN for your future.
He not only knows your future, but He has a plan for your future.
Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope."
This is telling us that God has done a lot of thinking about your future. God's thought more about your future than you have. A lot more! He has plans for your life. He's thought this thing through. They are good plans, plans that give you hope, plans that give you a future - not plans to harm you, but plans to bless you. God has a plan for your life.
Can I miss God's plan for my life? Of course. People miss God's plan all the time. Millions of people go through life and miss God's plan completely. You can miss it through apathy, arrogance, being ignorant of His plan, rebellion. There are a lot of ways to miss God's plan. Most people miss God's plan for their life. But He does have a plan for you. And it is a good plan.
It's your choice to either get in on it and cooperate with it or miss it and miss the very reason for which you were created.
3. God will be WITH YOU every step of the way.
The third thing the Bible says about your future is God will be with you every step of the way.
Hebrews 13:5 "For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”
None of us know what's going to happen this next year. But regardless of what happens to you, you're not going to go through it alone. God says, "I'm with you, I'll always be with you, I have been with you, I'm going to keep on being with you! You'll never go through it alone." This is called God's faithfulness.
Psalm 34:4 "I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears."
For every fear that we have, there is a corresponding attribute of God, something about His character, His personality, His nature, that corresponds to every fear that you've got.
Our fears come from either not understanding or not trusting various aspects of God's character. If we want to get over our fears, the secret is to seek the Lord, to understand what God's really like. Because once we understand what God's really like, we don't have anything to be afraid of.
